Tea more than just a beverage

Tea is much more than a beverage. Tea is a medicine, tea is a ceremony, tea is culture and yes tea can be a party. At Bash in a Box we choose the Afternoon Tea Party as our first bash because it represents the parties we love most – intimate - with only 8 people, adventurous – tasting different types of whole leaf tea, and of course my favorite – easy.
Also, I was lucky enough to recently experience Afternoon Tea at The Orangery at Kensington Palace in England and wanted to share that experience with my friends at home.

In the process of researching and putting together that bash I really fell in love with tea culture and the many ways to enjoy tea. I prefer mine black with lots of ice; Dina prefers iced Sweet Tea with lots of sugar, or if hot anything but black; and my neighbor enjoys Taiwanese bubble tea. I am sure you have your favorite too, even if your go-to beverage is coffee.
What I like about tea is its versatility.
You can use tea as a medicine. Drink peppermint tea for an upset stomach or chamomile tea to help you sleep.
Would you like your tea romantic? Add flowers like rose petals or chrysanthemum blossoms to your tea.

Or are you looking for a bit of Zen? Try a Japanese tea ceremony or other Asian tea ceremony.
Just about every culture has a unique tea. The Telegraph from England has a wonderful pictorial of teas around the world.
Since tea is my go to drink - I’ll keep experimenting with different teas and tea experiences. I am also thinking up a bash for next year that combines some of the elements we discovered in the Zen Bash with a more Asian style tea experience, or maybe a Moroccan themed Bash with mint tea. The possibilities are endless.
Until then I thought I would leave you with some ideas for different afternoon tea menus – you should never get bored with afternoon tea!
Variations on the classic Afternoon Tea Menu
Skip the quintessential tiny sandwiches, scones and mini desserts and try ----
Cheese and fruit (perhaps some cracker and bread too of course)
Sushi and spring rolls
Sliders and donut holes
Country theme (for example all French, all Greek, all Italian, all Indian… you get the idea)
All chocolate, candy or cookies, etc…
Let me know what your favorite tea is and what kind of afternoon tea you’d like to experience. And of course if you hold a Tea Bash, send us pics!
Cheers,
