One Minute Mindfulness - A Book Review

You know by now that Dina and I launched the State of Zen Bash recently. What you might not know is the level of research and preparation that goes into each Bash. The Zen Bash in particular stretched our existing knowledge and allowed us the opportunity to reach out to other experts for inspiration. We combed the bookshelves and read several books on how best to guide our Bash Hostesses in leading relaxing and bonding activities for the party, while ensuring enough variety to meet most sensibilities. One book that stood out for us is One Minute Mindfulness by Donald Alltmam. The thing I like best about this book is its approach-ability. It makes mindfulness seem like something I can do. The book also reminds me of a cookbook because you can choose your topic like main course, appetizer, desert only for mindfulness the topics are - Home & Play, Work & Creativity, Relationships & Love, Health & Well-being. Then you pick your recipe like - Morning Care, Beginner's Mind, De-Stress your inner space. Finally, there are the step by step actions you take to complete the exercise with a summary practice script to end. The book doesn't preach and you don't have to read it from cover to cover. Just take what appeals to you when it appeals to you.

What I also like about the book is that it makes sense, is readable, and quick enough for me not to get interrupted by a co-worker or family member - ONE MINUTE! I also really like the kindness that seeps through the pages - a kindness for yourself and your surroundings. We often live in a harsh world with pressures coming from every angle. Those pressures receded a bit in the pages of this book. So if your child is has started practicing mindfulness at school and you want to know what it is all about, if you enjoyed the State of Zen Bash and want to learn more, or if you just want some thoughtful ways to look at the world in a different way, check out One Minute Mindfulness by Donald Altman.

What do you think about the mindfulness movement? What inspired your inner peace today? Drop me a line and let me know. Cheers,
