Hula Girl Grill Inspiration

I am truly excited (and very afraid) that our next bash will be a luau. I am excited because it sounds fun to bring the island to my home and friends. I think it will be fun to wear leis and play games on the lawn. I am afraid because the guest list is large, the lawn looks patchy, and I will be putting myself out there again for throwing a large party. How does this happen? I think we'll have to wait for Dina's blog to find out that mystery. I am not self-aware enough to know.

Here is some Hawaiian music inspiration from Mr21SuperBoy

Anyway, Dina and I like to kick-off our Bash planning process with local inspiration. Living in the Washington DC Metro area we are blessed with many options. Much to my surprise, we even have a Hawaiian restaurant called Hula Girl Bar & Grill in Shirlington, VA.

Off we went to feel the island vibe, get a taste of Hawaiian food, and plan the outline of our Aloha Bash.

We had decided in earlier conversations that we wanted our luau to be more like the Hawaiian locals would have for a graduation or retirement party instead of the productions you attend as a tourist. We also found a wonderful resource "Luau Like a Local: The Easy Way" by JoAnn Takasaki. Together with Dina's great party planning and my two weeks working on the island we have the basis for the party.

The Hula Girl restaurant was the perfect launching pad. The food was just as I remembered it - low-key, filled with comfort, flavor, spice and strong drinks. The décor was subdued with just the right amount of kitsch. By dessert, we had the outline of a party and a start on the menu. Dina talked me off the wall of overthinking the activities and I think our Aloha bash will be relaxing and joyful. Stay tuned for more info on the upcoming luau bash, and if you are in the area check out Hula Girl Bar & Grill, you won't be disappointed.EndFragment

Cheers!
